A Long Weekend in Siargao: A Simple 4 Day Itinerary

Four days is not long on an island like this, but it is enough, if you spend them the way the island wants you to. Siargao runs on its own logic: the tide decides when the pools are swimmable, the sun decides when the day ends, and nothing good happens in a hurry. This itinerary follows that logic. One day to arrive, one for the road, one for the sea, and one to leave slowly.

It works for a couple and it works for a full villa of friends or family; we have noted where a group changes the plan.

Before You Fly

Two things to do before departure. First, withdraw cash. The island has ATMs, but they run dry, especially on weekends and holidays, and many places take cash only. Bring more than you think you need, in smaller bills where possible.

Second, look up the tides for your dates on a General Luna tide chart. More than the weather forecast, the tide table is what shapes a Siargao day: the famous rock pools only work at low tide, and the surf and the sandbars keep their own schedules. A quick glance at PAGASA, the Philippine weather service, is worth it too, particularly in the wetter months.

Day 1: Arrive and Settle

Flights land at Sayak airport in the north, and getting to General Luna is simple. Shared shuttle vans wait outside arrivals and take you straight to your accommodation for around 400 pesos per person, no booking needed. If you are a group of six or more, a private driver arranged in advance costs about the same per head and spares you the wait. Settle in, swim, do very little. Then, for your first sunset, head to the AFAM bridge just outside town. It is quieter than it used to be, and it remains one of the easiest ways to understand why people fall for this island: the tide moving under the bridge, the palms going dark, everyone pausing at once. Have dinner somewhere easy in General Luna afterwards and sleep early. Tomorrow has a road in it.

Day 2: The Scooter Loop North

Rent a scooter, or hire a driver for the day if two wheels are not your thing, and give the whole day to the island's east coast road. It is one of the great rides anywhere: smooth tarmac, palm corridors, and the sea appearing and disappearing on your right.

The classic stops, south to north: a swim at Ocean 9 beach, then the Magpupungko rock pools at Pilar, which are the reason you checked that tide chart, since the pools only appear at low tide. Continue north to Pacifico for the beach and a late lunch, and push on to the island's quieter top end if the day allows. Ride home in the soft late light.

Day 3: The Islands

Today is for the water. The classic island hopping day takes in Naked Island, Daku, and Guyam, three small islands off General Luna, with lunch grilled on the beach at Daku in the middle. You will be back by mid-afternoon, salty and happy. For sunset, go local: Malinao beach, just outside town, where the skate bowl by the sand fills with local kids and travelers as the light goes gold. Watch the session, watch the sky, and stay until both are done. It is our own neighbourhood's sunset, and we would put it against any on the island.

Day 4: Leave Slowly

No alarms. Spend the morning at Cloud 9, the island's famous wave, where the boardwalk gives you the surf without getting wet and the beach beside it is made for a last slow swim. Then brunch at Vedya, whose vegan bowls and toasts close a trip well; the rest of our breakfast and brunch favourites are there if you want options.

Then the shuttle back to Sayak, and the standard promise everyone makes on that ride: to come back with more days.
