None of what follows asks much of you. No grand gestures, no volunteering weeks. Just small decisions — where you eat, where you shop, how you spend a morning — that quietly send something back to the island. Here are five we'd recommend to anyone staying in or around General Luna.

1. Support a Local NGO

If you spend more than a day in Siargao, you'll notice the dogs and cats. They're everywhere — on the beach, outside the cafés, asleep in the middle of the road. Be Pawsitive is a local non-profit working on the most effective way to help them: spaying, neutering, and vaccinating the island's animals. The vaccinations matter more than most visitors realise — rabies is still very present in the Philippines, and protecting the island's dogs and cats protects everyone who lives here too.

A donation through their website goes directly to the next spay, neuter, and vaccination event. In 2026 alone they've already fixed nearly 500 pets, and every contribution moves the next one closer.

2. Join a Beach Cleanup with EcoHub

EcoHub Siargao organises regular beach cleanups around the island. It's a couple of hours of your morning, you meet locals and other travelers, and the plastic waste you collect doesn't just disappear into a bin — EcoHub sends it on to be recycled, so the work keeps going after you've left the beach.

It's also, quietly, one of the better ways to see the island. Cleanups happen on beaches you might never have found on your own — some of them genuinely beautiful, some of them the kind of secret spots people usually keep to themselves. Check their Instagram for upcoming dates. No sign-up fee, no experience needed. Just show up.

3. Visit the Eco Shop in the North

If you're riding north — towards Pacifico, Tangbo, or the quieter beaches we keep writing about — make a stop at Eco Siargao. It's a small eco shop in the north of the island, stocking low-waste and locally made goods. A good place to pick up what you need for the rest of your trip without adding plastic to an island that has nowhere to put it, and a better souvenir stop than most.

It pairs naturally with a sunset in Pacifico, if you're planning the day around it.

4. Eat at Kolekbibo

Kolekbibo is one of those places where a simple decision — where to have lunch — does real work. It supports a non-profit community project focused on women's empowerment here on the island, so the money you spend on your meal stays in the community and builds something with it.

The food stands on its own. You'd go back even if it did nothing else.

5. Have Your Coffee at The Clean Bean

Same idea, earlier in the day. The Clean Bean is a café supporting the same community work, and it makes an easy habit out of giving back: your morning coffee, somewhere it counts. If you're the kind of traveler who finds one café and stays loyal for the whole trip, this is a good one to choose.

Plan Your Visit

And if you're looking for a quiet place to stay with your favourite people — a four-bedroom villa with a private pool, just outside General Luna — The Grove House is opening in December 2026.
