The Water Is on Your Side

Forget the big-wave photos; those breaks are far offshore. What kids actually get is the lagoon side of the island: warm, shallow, glass-calm water at beaches like Daku on the island hopping day, where boatmen lift little ones in and out without being asked. Add a gentle mangrove paddle, a cold spring with rope swings, and a beach club with room to run, and the week fills itself. Our hidden gems and bars guide (see Mr Turtle) cover the family favourites. And yes, kids can learn to surf here: instructors teach beginners in the soft whitewater, and watching a seven-year-old stand up for the first time is worth the whole flight.

Nobody Argues About Dinner

Feeding a mixed group is easy here. Pizza and burgers for the small and stubborn, ceviche and local food for the adults, smoothie bowls for the teenagers documenting everything. Most restaurants are open-air and unfussy, so nobody minds a wandering toddler. Start with our restaurant guide and the breakfast list; half of both were chosen with groups in mind.

The Honest Part

A few things to know going in. The journey is long, so build a soft first day into the plan. Car seats are rare; families with babies should bring a carrier and use vans with drivers rather than scooters, which any host arranges in a phone call. The sun is serious and so are the mosquitoes at dusk, so pack accordingly. There are clinics in General Luna and a hospital on the island, and pharmacies are easy to find. None of this is a reason not to come; it's just the difference between a good trip and an easy one. The Department of Tourism also keeps general travel information for the Philippines current.

Where You Stay Decides Everything

This is the real secret of a group trip here. Hotel rooms scatter a family down a corridor; a whole house gathers it. One kitchen for early breakfasts and picky eaters, a pool for the hours between outings, bedrooms enough that naps and late nights can coexist, and a garden where the kids are free and visible. The group trips that work on this island are the ones with a true home base.

That conviction is why we built one. The Grove House, opening December 2026, is a calm four-bedroom villa with a private pool just outside General Luna, made precisely for this: eight to ten people, several generations, one table.
